The Leadership Society Community Engagement
2007-2008
Mission
The Leadership Society will support the Community by sustained involvement of committed leaders.
Community Leadership Work
In September, The Leadership Society’s work for the year began in collaboration with the Coalition for South Lorain (CSL).
The Coalition had identified two issues that were impacting the progress of the Coalition. The CSL needed to quickly find a new
location for their community center as the school they and their programs were housed in was being closed in 6 weeks, and to
develop a strategic plan that would guarantee the sustainability of the Coalition. Members asked The Leadership Society to assist
them in developing a plan to work on these issues to ensure progress towards the goals of the Coalition.
In October, the members of The Leadership Society determined that they would continue working with the Coalition in a number of ways:
- To assist the CSL in securing a temporary location for the Community Center
- To assist CSL in developing the framework for a strategic plan
- To assist the CSL in developing a strategic communication plan
By working together, the Coalition and the LS were able to find new housing, and a funder for rent was secured for the next six months.
In December and February, two Leadership Society members took on the role of facilitators for the next scheduled meetings of the
Coalition with the focus being on the development of a strategic plan. From those meetings it was determined that it was essential for the
sustainability of the Coalition to bring in more committed leaders and volunteers.
In March, twenty-five Coalition, Leadership Society members and community leaders came together for a facilitated meeting to determine
the interest and commitment in working on the goals of the Coalition. As there was a great deal of interest, the next step is a Leadership
Society facilitated meeting with the Coalition and community leaders on April 11 to build on the energy and commitment from the
February 22 meeting and to explore further options and possible actions related to the future of the Coalition for South Lorain.
Education Component of The Leadership Society
Members of The Leadership Society consider education to be an essential component of being an informed and committed leader
in the community.
Over the fall and winter, the members have interacted with members of the Coalition for South Lorain, thus increasing their knowledge
considerably about this aspect of the community. Ron Twining, Assistant County Administrator, shared information from his office on
South Lorain during a Leadership Society meeting.
